Hi everybody,
I just received one of these car keys micro cameras from Honk Kong on eBay. I have to say, quality is pretty impressive for such a small and cheap device (less than 15 bucks!)
I thought I write a little review on it.

Â
General Impression
The video recordings quality is quite amazing despite the fact that the frame rate is not 30fts, as they claim, but just a duplicated 12.5 fps. This is still fair enough.
I found that the Audio quality and recording levels are very acceptable.
The manual also claim still pictures of 1280x960 but as the sensor native resolution is 640x480, the picture is up-scaled.
The shutter response time is a bit slow.
This is the user manual you receive with the camera.
As you can see it’s is hardly understandable. It looks like they’ve used Google Translate to do their job.
Here is a small manual I made for those how needed help.
Â
- Format the Micro SD Card:
The micro SD needs to be formatted in FAT32 file format. To do this, follow those steps:
Insert the MicroSD card into the device (with the golden contacts on top).
Connect the micro USB cable to one of your computer USB connectors.
A popup can come at this moment asking for different options. Just close it.
Press Start, Right click on My Computer and choose Manage. Then go to Disk Managment and find the the unit corresponding to the Car Keys Camera.
Right click on the unit and chose Format. Choose Fat32 mode and press OK.
That’s it, your Spy camera is ready to be used.
Â
- Using the Spy camera:
Switch the device ON: Press the ON/OFF button for 2 seconds => The LED is ON
Â
- Take a picture:
With the device switched On, quickly press on the video/camera button.
It will take 1second to take the snapshot. The LED will go Off and On again. Once the Led is On, The camera is redy to take the next photograph.
Record a Video: With the device switched ON, press a long time on the Video/Camera button until the LED quickly flashes. At this moment it’s recording and the LED remains OFF. This is good as you dont’t want a LED on if you are spyingJ. To stop the recording, quickly prees on the Video/Camera button again. The LED will go on again.
Switch the device OFF: Press a the ON/OFF button for 2 seconds until the LED goes off.
Â
If you experience problems, you can always use the reset button.
- HOW TO SET THE DATE TIME
The camera keeps the date and time as long as the battery is not dead. It stamps the date time in the upper left corner of all video, and the date time property of all AVI and JPG files.
If you don’t set the date time, 1980 Jan 1 will be used.
For example, to set the date time to May 13 2009 at 3:10pm:
Connect the USB. Create a time.txt file in the flash root with one line inside in this format:
2010.03.20 15:12:00
Disconnect the USB. The camera will read the file, change the camera date time, and delete the file.
The Micro SD Camera (Methode 2)
For some cameras – settime.txt and time.txt files don’t work at all. It has to be a file named tag.txt reading EXACTLY this way:
[date]
2010/03/20
03:45:00
There must be a space after the first line AND AFTER THE SECOND LINE.Â
The time stamp will start when the key chain camera is powered on with this file on the root ( not when it’s crated) so create it with a time a minute ahead and then disconnect it from the USB (the proper way) and power up the keychain cam at that time.
